Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner turns around mid-flight after technical issue

An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had to return to Hong Kong mid-flight after a suspected technical issue.

The passenger jet - the same type as the aircraft involved in last week's tragedy in Ahmedabad - was bound for New Delhi but turned back after the pilot raised suspected an issue, an Air India spokesperson told Sky News.

It's not yet known what the suspected technical issue flagged by the pilot.

Flight AI315 took off from Hong Kong at 12.16pm and landed just over an hour later, according to tracking data on Flightradar24.

An Air India spokesperson told Sky News that the airline hasn't yet established if there was a technical issue but the pilot suspected something.

"We are providing all necessary on-ground assistance to the passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption," the spokesperson added.

The aircraft is now undergoing checks, Reuters reported.

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Hong Kong-New Delhi flight.

It comes just days after an Air India Dreamliner catastrophically crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport in western India, killing 229 passengers and 12 crew, with one person surviving the crash.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the first British deaths in the crash have now been officially confirmed.

"My profound condolences to all in this moment of shared grief," he said on X.
